Help for Dyslexia

February 13, 2013

I am so thankful for the iTherapy service at Lynn Valley Optometry.  Last fall, my grandson started school and was having difficulty reading.  My daughter talked to his teacher and the teacher suspected dyslexia.  Vancouver school teachers are familiar with the symptoms.  After a medical exam to rule out a physical problem, he was diagnosed with dyslexia.  The doctor suggested additional treatment in a private setting. My daughter remembered that she had a friend who had taken their child to Lynn Valley Optometry for treatment of a lazy eye so she called for a consultation.  The staff there was great and set up a program for my grandson and he began to improve almost immediately.  They explained that each person with dyslexia in Vancouver should have an individual plan created for them.  This is exactly what the iTherapy service is. I am pleased to report that my grandson is doing much better … he loves going to school and reading and the teacher reports he is really improving.  It was very interesting to learn that dyslexia often runs in families and sometimes a reading disability can be diagnosed as ADD or ADHD.  Dyslexia or DRD (Developmental reading disorder) occurs when there is a problem in the areas of the brain that interpret language.  It is not a vision problem, but once the problem is discovered, vision therapy helps the learning related vision problems.
